How to Relieve Neck Pain Fast: A Step-by-Step Guide

Table of Contents

It’s no coincidence that humans refer to anything we hate as “a pain in the neck.” Neck pain can ruin your day, week or even month faster than you can say, “Holy C2 vertebrae, Batman!”.

Physical accidents, poor posture, and inadequate office ergonomics are common causes of neck pain. Then, of course, there are those times when you simply reach for something in a cupboard, and your neck throws an inexplicable tantrum. Whatever the cause, neck pain is a constant reminder that our bodies, while miraculous, can sometimes have a mind of their own.

As a chiropractor, I’ve seen firsthand how deeply neck issues can impact people’s lives. Thankfully, there are things you can do to take back control and free yourself from the mysterious grip of neck pain. Below, you’ll find a step-by-step guide to understanding neck pain and how to alleviate the symptoms fast.

The first step to curing any condition is understanding its underlying causes. So, let’s start with a quick overview of the basics of neck pain.

 Understanding Neck Pain

Neck pain is a condition most people will experience at some point in their lives. It can range from a dull ache to a sharp, burning sensation. There are seven vertebrae in your neck. Each of these has small holes through which nerves branch out and control various parts of your body. This is why the pain is not necessarily localised to your neck and may radiate to the shoulders, upper back, face, arms and hands. It may also be accompanied by headaches and muscle tightness, and it often limits the movement of your head.

 Neck Pain Causes

The list of things that can trigger neck pain is vast. However, some of the most common causes we come across include:

  • Poor posture: Whether you’re staring at screens, operating heavy machinery, or delivering parcels, the way you walk, stand, and sit can lead to neck pain.
  • Awkward sleeping positions: The simple act of sleeping can strain the muscles and ligaments in your neck if you slip into an awkward position for too long.
  • Muscle tension: Stress and anxiety can cause your neck muscles to tighten and ache.
  • Injuries: Accidents or sports injuries can trigger pain or exacerbate pre-existing niggles.
  • Prolonged technology use: Spending long hours in front of screens can strain your neck muscles. This is sometimes colloquially called “Text Neck.”

Types of Neck Pain

Understanding the nature of your neck pain is the first step to diagnosis and treatment of neck pain. Here are the primary sensations chiropractors use to describe your condition:

  • Axial Neck Pain: This is the most common form of neck pain patients present to us with. It is localised in one part of the neck and does not radiate to other areas.
  • Radicular Pain: This type of pain radiates along a nerve path, and the sensation generally feels like it’s spreading down into the shoulder, arm, and/or hand. This can occur when a nerve root in the cervical spine becomes inflamed.
  • Referred Pain: This is pain experienced in a location other than its source. For example, when you turn your neck, you may feel pain between your shoulder blades.

How to Relieve Neck Pain Fast

There are numerous therapeutic options that people can choose to relieve neck pain. Ultimately it comes down to each patient’s decision as to which route is best for them. Our years of experience have shown that chiropractic treatment typically results in great outcomes for our patients and allows them to get back to enjoying their lives with little or no symptoms.

Like all therapeutic techniques, treatment alone is usually not the answer. It’s crucial to look at your lifestyle and daily habits as part of a holistic wellness regime. Here are some steps that can help to alleviate neck pain:

  1. Stay hydrated: It may sound wild, but dehydration can contribute to neck pain and muscle stiffness. So keep an eye on your hydration and make an effort to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  2. Apply a hot and cold compress: Heat brings blood flow to your muscles and relaxes them, while a cold compress provides temporary relief when your muscles are inflamed.
  3. Check your posture: Poor posture is most commonly caused by slouching or craning your neck forward while using electronic devices. These bad habits can strain the muscles in your neck.
  4. Adjust your workspace ergonomics: Always work with your computer monitor at eye level, and ensure your chair provides adequate support for your back and neck.
  5. Reconsider your pillow: If you’re getting neck pain regularly, consider upgrading to a pillow with adequate neck and head support.
  6. Avoid sleeping on your tummy: This is literally asking for neck pain. You can train yourself out of this habit with time, relaxation practices, and good sleep hygiene.
  7. Practice stress reduction techniques: Stress can greatly exacerbate muscle tension and pain.
  8. Stay active: Keeping your neck mobile can help alleviate pain. However, you must be attentive to your body so you can avoid activities that exacerbate your pain.
  9. Use over-the-counter pain medications cautiously: Non-prescription pain medication like ibuprofen or paracetamol can temporarily relieve neck pain. However, you must follow the recommended dosage and use caution if you have any underlying health conditions.
  10. Seek professional support: If your neck pain persists or worsens despite self-care measures, consider consulting a healthcare professional such as a chiropractor for further evaluation and treatment options.

A qualified chiropractor can provide advice and/or treatments to help you address all of these concerns.

I've been coming to be fit Chiro for a short while now to help with my neck and back pain. Dr Anthony recommended the water pillow he sells in his practice to help - at first I was a little skeptical but after 3 weeks of use, I don't wake up with a stiff neck or neck pain any more. Super easy to use and you can change how firm you want it depending on how much water you fill inside. Thanks for the suggestion! I've told all my girlfriends about it as well!

I first visited Dr Anthony with hip pain that I’ve dealt with for years, and the pain completely went away after the first few sessions. I’ve been seeing him for a month now and have only noticed more improvements in my sleep, exercise and general wellbeing. Would definitely recommend as his approach to treatment is very thorough and he makes sure that you understand what’s going on throughout the process!
